This duo from California make some great "feel good" music.  Exile makes the beats and Blu spits the verses.  Honestly, I feel that Exile produces some of the best beats that I ever heard and I am heartbroken that they haven't come out with anything new for a while.  Nonetheless I definitely insist that you listen to these guys.

Toro Y Moi

Toro Y Moi takes an alternative approach to making their music.  They have hard hitting beats, but they're not necessarily hip-hop driven.  The vocals almost remind me of Animal Collective too because they sound so spacey and out there.  Check out their new released album "Underneath The Pine" since it has some good funky stuff.

Nazcar Nation

I've been getting into a lot of alternative rock recently.  The alternative band, Nazcar Nation, delivers some awesome "feel good" vibes.  The song that stuck out most to me was "Beeswax" since it was pretty cool hearing them fuse electronic sounds and acoustic instruments together.  Make sure to also check out their full EP "Dynasty" as well.

Sam.I.Yam

When you make beats you gotta go for that big sound.  In Samiyam's case, he has that "CHAMPION SOUND" (notice the use of caps lock here).  The producer outta Ann Arbor Michigan has some of the most creative material that I've ever heard.  A lot of his beats are so distorted and dismantled that I can't even recognize the original melody of the track that he sampled.  His beats are so raw that I just wanna punch a deer in the face.  Ok, maybe I went a little too far with that, but you get the idea.  This guy's stuff is awesome and you need to check it out.  Just for future reference; deer are chill animals, I don't punch them in the face.

Onra

Arnaud Bernard, better known by his stage name Onra, is a french hip hop beatmaker who resides in Paris.  A lot of his beats are linked to his nationality and culture.  In 2006 Onra went to Vietnam, where his grandparents are from, and brought back some 30 old Chinese and Vietnamese vinyl records. He then made a full album with this material, Chinoiseries, his most critically acclaimed album.  His single on the album, The Anthem, was chosen to be played in the Coca-Cola commercial for the Beijing Olympics.  This dude is legit dawg.  For real.  So I suggest that you check out his latest album Long Distance.  It's all about those 80's samples baby.

Videogame Beats!

Where are my Nintendo heads at!?  If you like 8-bit sounds mixed with hard hitting beats than this is the beat tape for you.  There are a bunch of good producers on here with their own unique style for each track. Overall, the whole collection of tracks sounds like it is the soundtrack for an NES game, hence the album name Dust Off the NES.  Hope you like the beats. Letsa Goooo.

Tyler, The Creator

The 18 year old from California has been receiving a lot of recognition lately.  Tyler The Creator has a very dark and insane style of rapping (when I mean insane, it's literally crazy).  In his new single Yonkers, you can see his creative, but extremely disturbing, side of rapping which creates an overall sinister tone.  Take MF Doom, make him more aggressive and psychotic, and you get Tyler The Creator.      I hope you enjoy watching people eat roaches.

Straight Chillen'

I just made a beat tape a couple of months ago.  They are mostly music samples looped over and accompanied by electronic sounds/beats.  It was pretty fun and chill to make, hence the name "Straight Chillen".  Hopefully you guys will enjoy the album as much as I did making it.  Bon' Appetit.

Dorian Concept

Whoa.  This dude from Europe is all about making funky/trippy piano sounds on his keyboard.  Some of his tracks take a bit of acquired taste, but after you listen to his tracks a couple of times you will appreciate what type of musical standpoint he's coming from.  That being said, I hope you enjoy the video above.  It gives the best visual representation of his musical style and approach. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is a freelance multi instrumentalist /dj/arranger/composer/music director/producer/educator residing in Los Angeles, California.  As a studio musician he has recorded for Willi.i.am, Erykah Badu, Dr. Dre, John Cale, Barry Manilow, Joss Stone, Michael Buble, Rene Olmstead and Common.  In this video, he composes an orchestral rendition of J Dilla's beat "Hoc n Pucky".  Please don't overlook this guy any longer.  He's got the goods.

One of my friends showed this album to me the other day.  It's pretty chill and it uses a lot of classic Jazz/Soul samples.  This is some quality production and the beats are easy for any MC to spit over.  Don't sleep on Todd Sykes people.  Check his album out.

RIP J Dilla

Today marks the birthday of the late legendary producer, J Dilla.  James Dewitt Yancey, better known as J Dilla, is easily one of the most influential figures of hip hop whether you know it or not.  He had worked on productions with Busta Rhymes, Common, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson and the list goes on.  Sadly, he was only recognized and more appreciated for his work after his death, which resulted from the blood disease called Lupus.  To this day, he still inspires artists around the world with his music and he will never be forgotten.  Rest in beats Jay Dee.

This Producer from Colorado caught my attention.  He takes a very careful and layered approach when making his beats.  His unique style of mixing and making beats has also caught the attention of Flying Lotus and his record label, Brainfeeder.  If that insight isn't enough for you to check this guy out I don't know what will.  Below this description is one of his beattape albums so I suggest you get downloading.

Flying Lotus

Los Angeles resident Steven Ellison a.k.a. Flying Lotus is a hip-hop producer and beat maker.  He is occasionally linked to artists such as Madlib and fellow LA resident the Gaslamp Killer for his more abstract and sometimes jazz tinted style. Flying Lotus, often abbreviated to FlyLo, is also responsible for many of the musical loops heard during the 'bumps' on Adult Swim as well as being a casual filmmaker. Being the great nephew of Alice Coltrane , John Coltrane 's wife, Ellison comes from a rich musical heritage, and these influences are definitely evident in his music (Do The Astral Plane anyone?).  His new albums such as Cosmogramma have received critical acclaim around the world and it is only a matter of time until his music gets recognized on a more grand scale.

Probably one of the most talented (yet overlooked) producers on the funky fresh boom-bap beat scene.  Damu goes old school and he has a plethora of records to flip at his disposal (you can obviously tell in the video).  His beats can grab the attention of any true MC or hip-hop head so you're missing out if you ain't listening.  Oh, he also performs impromptu gigs around NYC.  So if you see him, give a shout out for PeruJew will ya?

Yes this is the actual the name of the artist.  And believe me, the music is just as outrageous as the name (in a good way of course!).  TEED focusses on trippy dance/house music and delivers some of the dirtiest bass lines that I've ever heard.  It just makes ya' wanna dance, crump, frolic, or all of the above.  All in all, you are seriously missing out if you're sleeping on this Extinct Dinosaur, because this music is TOTALLY ENORMOUS (pun intended).
